What exactly is the Internet of Things ?
In the last few years, it is impossible not to hear the term “Internet of Things”. However, a lot of people still don’t know what exactly it is. Originally, when the internet was formed, it was only used by government agencies and research labs. But since 1994, it expanded to the common man and became very popular. In a matter of few years, it has established itself as one of the most powerful inventions and has changed our life forever. The internet helped connect people in a way that has made the world a global village. It has enabled us to connect to people and have a greater people to people interaction to share data and information. This is called the Internet of People.
However, another community of the internet is where devices connect to each other and with people to share data and information. The Internet of Things or IoT may be defined as a network of connected devices that can communicate with each other autonomously over the internet, without human intervention. It is a world which creates a digital aura of the people and their surroundings, in real time and context aware, to give the best possible living experience.
The Internet of Things has the capacity to become far larger than the Internet of People. The 1990s’ fixed Internet wave connected 1 billion users while the 2000s’ mobile wave connected another 2 billion. But IoT has the potential to connect to around 50 billion devices to the internet by 2020, which would be around 6 times the people living on earth. Further, per Cisco, IoT devices will generate 600 zettabytes by 2020. This data can open new opportunities beyond the tech industry touching architecture, healthcare, retail, oil & gas, agriculture, aviation and transport. The Internet of Things is often referred to as “Industry 4.0” or “The Fourth Industrial Revolution”.
Many technologies take a lot of time to come to actual use. They were only used when the requirement was absolutely necessary and the people could realistically do it. So, the IoT is still in it’s early years. The world isn’t what it used to be. Technology has been changing our life every day from the steam engine to the internet. It was famously said by writer Mark Weiser that “The most profound technologies are those that disappear. They weave themselves into the everyday fabric of life until they’re indistinguishable.” IoT is such a technology that is knocking the door, waiting to be unleashed to its full potential. A technology that’ll be engraved in human life in the next decade. IoT is the future.
